Madden NFL 25 Is Over 10 Years Old, But Madden 25 Could Also Be Announced This Week

A predicament over a decade in the making will come to a head this year, and Electronic Arts has no one to blame but itself. In 2013, Madden NFL 25 was released and named as such to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the football video game franchise. However, now that it’s time for the actual 2025 edition of the title, this year’s entry could sport the exact same name.

Earlier this week, a new leak reported that Madden NFL 25 will be announced tomorrow, May 16, with a release date of August 16–with early access for the Deluxe Edition or EA Play subscribers. For those unfamiliar, the football franchise features the year for when the NFL season ends instead of the year the game comes out. An untitled Madden documentary was unveiled to be in the works for Prime Video this week, too.

EA revealed Madden NFL 25 in January 2013, meaning the game skipped being called Madden NFL 14 with that entry. Marking the franchise’s quarter-century milestone, NFL legend Barry Sanders was named the cover star for that game after winning a voting contest. The former Detroit Lions running back beat out other Hall of Famers like Joe Montana and Jerry Rice.

If this year’s edition goes ahead with Madden NFL 25 as well, it wouldn’t be the first time EA has used the same exact name for a video game. For instance, the publisher had no problem launching Need for Speed in 2015 (a reboot) or even Need for Speed: Most Wanted in 2012, separate from the same-named game in 2005. Additionally, Activision Blizzard has gotten into this habit recently with the Modern Warfare subseries in Call of Duty. Other high-profile titles following this format include God of War (2018) and Saints Row (2022).

With that in mind, it’s likely EA just goes ahead with Madden NFL 25. Over a decade has passed since the 25th-anniversary edition, and it’s not like that version is available these days to confuse consumers. It shouldn’t be long to find out for sure, though.

Hi-Fi Rush Studio May Have Shut Down, But It’s Getting One Final Patch Today

Following the news that Hi-Fi Rush developer Tango Gameworks will be closing down, the studio has announced that it plans to release one final patch for the rhythm-action game today. While the developer didn’t provide specifics, it did mention that this patch will address several minor issues in the game and that plans are still in place to release a physical edition of Hi-Fi Rush in partnership with Limited Run Games for Xbox Series X|S and PS5.

With Tango being caught in the crossfire of Microsoft’s cost-cutting plans, the company has been heavily criticized for this decision to shut down a beloved studio with a long history of popular games. Xbox president Sarah Bond recently attempted to defend the decision with a vague answer, while head of Xbox Game Studios Matt Booty reportedly said the company needed more smaller-scale games that win awards just a day after staff at Tango Gameworks were all fired.

No further updates are planned for Redfall, but its servers will remain online for the foreseeable future. Hellblade 2 Launch Times Revealed

The next big Microsoft game, Senua’a Saga: Hellblade II, releases on May 21. It’s one of the most-anticipated games of 2024, and many are likely wondering when precisely they can jump in. Microsoft has now released the official launch times for the game in regions around the world.

The game launches at 1 AM PT in California on May 21, which works out to 4 AM ET in New York and 9 AM in London. Players in Japan can get started at 5 PM, while Australians can jump in at 6 PM local time. You can see all the launch times below, as shared by Xbox on social media.

Now Playing: Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II Everything To Know

Hellblade II is a sequel to the 2017 Hellblade that released exclusively on PS4 for console before coming to Xbox One a year later. Now, Microsoft owns Ninja Theory and the Hellblade series, which means Hellblade II is coming to Xbox Series X|S (and PC) at launch, and there is no word on a PS5 release.

Hellblade II will be available through Game Pass at launch, or it can be purchased outright for $50 USD.

In other Hellblade news, Microsoft just launched a new Hellblade merch line, including t-shirts, a pint glass, a notebook, and more.

New Spelling Game Comes To Apple News Plus With iOS 17.5 Update

Crosswords were apparently just the beginning for Apple News+. With the recent iOS 17.5 update, Apple has now added a brand-new puzzle experience to the subscription service called Quartiles.

The spelling game sees players trying to create words from two- to four-letter tiles. For example, you might put together “pon” and “der” to make ponder in Quartiles. However, stringing together longer terms leads to high point totals, and new puzzles will become available daily.

Quartiles follows Crossword and Crossword Mini, the first puzzle games for Apples News+ that were introduced with the iOS 17 update. These experiences are separate from Apple Arcade, another subscription that can be bundled (called Apple One) with Apple News+ starting at $20 per month. Apple News+ is $13 monthly standalone, while Apple Arcade costs $7 monthly.

The App Store also altered its policies in response to the European Union’s Digital Markets Act. This change has meant game emulators are popping up on the App Store for iPhones and iPads, though that doesn’t necessarily mean loading them with ROMs is legal.

Meanwhile, the new iPad Pro looks like Apple’s best–and thinnest–gaming console yet. The device has an OLED screen and Apple’s M4 chip, which should make it great for mobile gaming. It launches today, May 15, with a starting price of $999.

Square Enix Says Final Fantasy VII Rebirth Didn’t Meet Sales Expectations Amid Struggles

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth may have impressed critics and players alike, but it apparently didn’t meet Square Enix’s sales expectations. The company announced this as part of a wider slate of bad news earlier this month, as its key financial performance indicators were far lower than what analysts projected.

This sales shortfall isn’t exclusive to FFVII Rebirth–Square Enix announced that Final Fantasy XVI and Foamstars also did not sell as much as the company forecasted. Per Bloomberg, its operating income of 32.5 billion yen represents a 26.6% year-on-year decrease from 2023, and the company projected an overall operating income of 40 million yen, well short of the 57 million yen average analyst projection.

Kiryu said that Square Enix would shift several aspects of its strategy as part of this announcement, prioritizing a multiplatform approach that contrasts strongly with its previous approach of releasing exclusively on PlayStation consoles. He also said that the company would focus on quality over quantity, cutting projects that are unlikely to be profitable. However, the president stated that it would take a while for these changes to bear fruit, stating “our winning formula is no longer effective.”

In GameSpot’s Final Fantasy VII Rebirth review, critic Tamoor Hussain praised the game’s combat and character development, while taking issue with some of its convoluted narrative beats. “As a game that has the unenviable task of living up to one of the strongest legacies in the medium, it is a worthy second chapter,” he wrote. “Whether Square Enix can bring it all together in the third and final part will be the subject of much discussion from here on out. Just like at Destiny’s Crossroads, an unknown future beckons once again, and anything is still possible.”

PS5 Shipped 5X Number Of Xbox Series X|S Consoles In Past 3 Months, Analyst Says

Sony’s PlayStation 5 console is heavily outselling Microsoft’s Xbox Series X|S, according to Daniel Ahmad, director of research at Niko Partners, a firm that aggregates data on video game and console sales.

4.5 million PlayStation 5 consoles were shipped in the first quarter of 2024, with Sony selling roughly five times as many units as Microsoft’s Xbox Series X|S console in the first three months of this year, Ahmad said. Sony’s console has sold a total of 59.2 million units in total since its launch in November 2020.

While this is good news for Sony, Ahmad also pointed out that the PS5 still hasn’t quite caught up to its predecessor. The PS4 sold 60 million units in the same timeframe after its launch, and Sony does not expect that the PS5 will outsell the PS4 over the next year when compared to the same point in the PS4’s life cycle.

The report also revealed that digital sales are up in a big way. In 2023, the digital ratio for game software sales on PlayStation consoles reached 70%–a massive increase from 2015, when digital sales accounted for only 19% of game purchases. According to Ahmad, Sony partially attributes the uptick in digital sales to the COVID-19 pandemic, but notes that players were already beginning to lean toward digital purchases over physical purchases in the months prior to the pandemic.

Meanwhile, Xbox’s hardware revenue was down 31% during the January – March 2024 window, according to the company’s recent third-quarter earnings report. Xbox’s parent company, Microsoft, and the CEO of its gaming division Phil Spencer have recently come under fire for a number of reasons, including mass layoffs at Xbox, changes to Xbox game exclusivity, and most recently, the closure of of several studios, including Tango Gameworks, developer of several popular games like The Evil Within series, Ghostwire: Tokyo, and 2023’s rhythm-based hit, Hi-Fi Rush.

Sony’s New Live-Service Game Concord Launches This Year

One of Sony’s live-service games, Concord, will be released this year. The game is the debut launch from Firewalk studios, which Sony acquired last year.

According to Sony’s latest financial report, Sony said that it is looking forward to releasing more live-service games, especially after the massive success of Helldivers 2, which sold 12 million copies across PS5 and PC in 12 weeks. The latest expansion for Destiny 2, called the Final Shape, is launching on June 4, while Concord is scheduled to launch this year.

However, Sony didn’t specify whether it’d be the 2024 calendar or within the 2024 fiscal year, which ends in March 2025. Back in February, Sony also mentioned that there would be no major releases from its first-party studios until April 2025 at the earliest.

It’s possible that Sony doesn’t count Concord as a “major franchise” since it’s not from one of the company’s major studios or a large, established IP.

Not many details are known about Concord, but its reveal trailer hints at some sort of sci-fi setting. The game will be released on PS5 and PC.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows Cover Apparently Leaks, Reveals Two Possible Heroes

The cover for Assassin’s Creed Shadows seems to have leaked, and it looks like players will be able assume the roles of two heroes.

The leaked cover features a black male samurai named Yasuke and a female shinobi named Naoe. According to Insider Gaming, Yasuke was on a slave ship when it was attacked and everyone else on it was killed. He was the lone survivor, being rescued and brought to Japan. There, he took up learning the art of the samurai under Nobunga.

While there weren’t many details about Naoe, apparently she starts off as Yasuke’s enemy. However, they eventually become allies in order to reunify Japan. The series has been known to include real-life historical figures. Some that will appear in Assassin’s Creed Shadow are reportedly Naoe’s father, who is Fujibayashi Nagato, as well as Oda Nobunaga, Akechi Mitsuhide, Hattori Hanzo, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, Kōdai-in, Oichi, Ashikaga Yoshiaki, and Akechi Kagemitsu.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows is the new name for Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed set in Japan, which was previously Codename Red. The full reveal for the game airs on May 15 at 9 AM PT / 12 PM ET. The release date is also reportedly November 15.

The newest patches for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III and Warzone have arrived, ushering in the latest changes to the popular multiplayer shooters.

Starting with Modern Warfare III, players can expect a variety of bug fixes and a new feature. In particular, players can now preview equipment skins from the in-game store. Bugs related to tracked challenges and the customization menu have been fixed, too.

Now Playing: Modern Warfare III, Warzone, & Warzone Mobile – Cross Progression Trailer

On the Derail map, this newest patch fixes an issue that allowed players to access the blue train car when they should not have been able to. For the Enhanced Vision Goggles field upgrade, players no longer need to unequip the goggles when the battery dies. Instead, player vision is blurred.

There are weapon changes, too. The DG-58 LSW machine gun has its hand-damage multipliers reduced from 1.1x to 1x. The COR-45 handgun has now been fixed so players cannot fire faster than intended.

For Warzone, weapon prestige camos are now supported for Modern Warfare II weapons. There are bug fixes, too. In particular, players previously could not enter a vehicle when using the biometric scanner, but now they can. The Call of Duty Endowment challenge has been fixed, too, to address snapshot grenade issues.
