Deadpool Co-Creator Rob Liefeld Is Retiring From The Character, Has Big Hopes For Deadpool 3

Deadpool co-creator Rob Liefeld is preparing to bid farewell to the merc with a mouth, as after illustrating thousands of pages and dozens of covers of his signature creation, the veteran comic book creator is calling it a day. Liefeld plans to go out on a high note for his final Deadpool story, as he is currently working on a new comic book that’ll be released after Deadpool 3 hits cinemas in July. As for why Liefeld is planning to retire from drawing Deadpool, Liefeld explained that health issues have been hampering his passion for the creator.

“About 10 years ago, I really felt like I was in a groove, and in my mind, I was going to do this till I was 70,” Liefeld explained to The Hollywood Reporter. “But the eyes and the hands, and the aches and the pains–they have a different timetable, I’ve learned as I’ve gotten older. The last year’s worth of work was the hardest to produce.”

Liefeld has arguably been the biggest ambassador for Deadpool ever since the first film starring Ryan Reynolds as the foul-mouthed mercenary landed in cinemas in 2016, and since then, he has brought his distinctive art style and writing to several Deadpool mini-series at Marvel. The comic book legend remains excited for Deadpool 3, and he believes the new film won’t disappoint fans of the character.

“I saw some crazy shit, and none of that has made its way out,” Liefeld teased. “I was really excited by what I was seeing. Fans want Deadpool 3 to represent a turning point for Marvel. I’m really hoping that this takes Marvel into new heights and puts them on a new direction. I’m as excited as everybody else.”

Recently, Kingsman director Matthew Vaughn offered some high praise for Deadpool 3, claiming that the film will be just the “jolt” that the Marvel Cinematic Universe needs. Filming on Deadpool 3 wrapped recently, and it’s scheduled to hit theaters on July 26. Not only is Reynolds back to play the motor-mouthed mercenary, but he’ll be joined by Hugh Jackman as Deadpool is finally going to cross paths with Wolverine.
