Metroid’s Samus Almost Came To Fortnite—Here’s Why She Didn’t

Samus Aran from the Metroid series almost made an appearance in Fortnite, but Nintendo and Epic couldn’t agree on how she’d be implemented.

In an interview with Game File, former Epic Games chief creative officer Donald Mustard said that Nintendo declined Epic’s offer to have Samus join Fortnite. “They got really hung up on their characters showing up on platforms that weren’t their platforms,” Mustard explained. “They would be thrilled to have Nintendo characters in Fortnite, but just only if it’s on their platform.”

Mustard went on to say that Epic and Nintendo couldn’t come to a mutual decision because of Fortnite’s content parity across all platforms. Epic wanted the game to be the same experience no matter what device players were on.

Nintendo is the only console platform holder that doesn’t have a representative in Fortnite. For PlayStation, God of War’s Kratos joined the game and for Xbox, Halo’s Master Chief joined the fray, among many other gaming characters, such as Nathan Drake and Lara Croft.

Back during Epic and Apple’s legal battle, court documents revealed that Epic wanted to implement Samus, but that somehow never came to be and there was no clear reason as to why. Now, we know. The inclusion of Samus in Fortnite was even heavily teased back in a Fortnite comic that released in 2021.

Fortnite is still introducing more collaborations, and one with pop star Billie Eilish is coming on April 23.

Razer Face Mask Didn’t Meet N95 Requirements, Company Fined Over $1 Million

The Razer Zephyr face mask might have looked cool–especially for Bane stans–but it wasn’t protecting you from contracting COVID-19 to the degree Razer claimed. As such, the US Federal Trade Commission has come to a proposed settlement with the company that will see the peripheral maker paying over $1 million in fines.

PCGamesN reported that the main issue was Razer advertising the Zephyr product as a N95-grade face mask, which means it would remove 95% of airborne particles. That wasn’t the case. “These businesses falsely claimed, in the midst of a global pandemic, that their face mask was the equivalent of an N95 certified respirator,” said the FTC’s bureau of consumer protection director Samuel Levine in a press release.

Now Playing: Razer Smart Mask: Project Hazel – Official CES 2021 Reveal

In early 2021, Razer unveiled the Zephyr face mask as a N95 concept product that also featured RGB lighting. Shortly thereafter, the company confirmed it was moving forward with making the accessory, with the Zephyr officially launching in October 2021 for a starting price of $99. There were also packs of filters being sold for the face mask, with 10 costing $30.

However, just a few short months later in January 2022, Razer removed the N95-grade claims about the Zephyr face mask. Additionally, the company scrubbed a website FAQ section that originally referred to the face mask as a medical device.

Razer sent the following response to PCGamesN about the settlement: “We disagree with the FTC’s allegations and did not admit to any wrongdoing as part of the settlement. It was never our intention to mislead anyone, and we chose to settle this matter to avoid the distraction and disruption of litigation and continue our focus on creating great products for gamers. Razer cares deeply about our community and is always looking to deliver technology in new and relevant ways.”

Paul Walter Hauser Lands Mystery Role In The Fantastic Four

Marvel’s upcoming Fantastic Four reboot is beginning to fill out the rest of its cast, and now Emmy-winner Paul Walter Hauser is the latest addition. Via Deadline, Hauser’s role is currently undisclosed, so he could be playing a friend or foe to the first family of superheroes.

Hauser won his Emmy earlier this year for his haunting supporting role as serial killer Larry Hall in Apple TV+’s Black Bird. He also starred as the title character in Richard Jewell, and he has a recurring role on Netflix’s Cobra Kai.

In 2024 alone, Hauser has voiced the Dark in Netflix’s animated film, Orion and the Dark, in addition to lending his voice to Embarrassment in Pixar’s Inside Out 2. Hauser also recently signed on to star as the late Saturday Night Live legend Chris Farley in a biopic directed by Josh Gad. Additionally, Hauser will star opposite Liam Neeson, Pamela Anderson, and Kevin Durand in The Naked Gun reboot.

Earlier this year, Marvel announced that The Mandalorian’s Pedro Pascal will play Mr. Fantastic alongside Vanessa Kirby as Invisible Woman, Joseph Quinn as Human Torch, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as the Thing. More recently, Ozark’s Julia Garner was cast as Shalla-Bal, who will be the Silver Surfer in the MCU.

The Fantastic Four will be directed by Matt Shakman from a script by Eric Pearson, Josh Friedman, Jeff Kaplan, and Ian Springe. Marvel will release the film on July 25, 2025.

ESRB Rating For Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition Appears Out Of Nowhere

Nintendo’s release schedule for the remainder of 2024 is a major unknown; other than remakes of Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door (May 23) and Luigi’s Mansion 2 (June 27), there are no first-party titles announced by Nintendo for release this year. A new ESRB rating might hint at an upcoming reveal, as a listing for Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition has appeared on the ratings board’s website.

The ESRB listing calls Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition a “collection of 2D challenges and platformer games in which players traverse through various modes (e.g., speedrun, survival).” These modes will incorporate various challenges including reaching certain areas or battling groups of enemies, among others, according to the ESRB description.

Nintendo World Championships 1990

Some speculated that the tease could have been an imminent return for the in-person event after known Nintendo leaker Pyoro posted an image of the Nintendo World Championships 1990 NES cartridge on Twitter. Per VGC, the ESRB description instead implies that a new game is coming rather than a port of the old cartridge.

The original Nintendo World Championships 1990 game was a similar collection of minigames featuring Super Mario Bros., Rad Racer, and Tetris, which was used during the competition of the same name. Two versions of the cartridge exist–a gray version which was distributed to some competitors in the event, and a gold version which was given as a prize to readers of Nintendo Power magazine.

Nintendo’s immediate future has been a major question for its fan base since the beginning of the year, as rumors of the company’s next home console have circulated for a majority of 2024. Most recently, reports surfaced that the console was internally delayed by Nintendo until 2025 in the hopes of avoiding supply issues on launch day.

Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition has not been officially announced as of this writing. Meanwhile, a recent Heritage Auctions listing says that the original 1990 cartridge sold for $84,000. Hopefully this new game, when announced, doesn’t cost the same price.
