Priest Arrested For Using Church Funds On Candy Crush And Other Mobile Games
There have been plenty of church scandals over the decades, but this might be the very first one that involves Candy Crush. Via The Philadelphia Inquirer, Reverend Lawrence Kozak was arrested in Pottstown, Pennsylvania on April 25 and charged with stealing over $40,000 in funds from his former parish, St. Thomas More Church. According to the report, Kozak’s vice of choice was mobile gaming, especially Candy Crush and Mario Kart.
The Archdiocese of Philadelphia removed Kozak from his parish in November 2022 after an internal investigation determined that he spent “an astronomical amount of Apple transactions” on the church’s credit card. The charges span from September 2019 to July 2022. Kozak is also said to have used church funds to buy gifts for his goddaughter.
Kozak reportedly told investigators in 2022 that the money was used to “power up” and give him an advantage while playing his mobile games. Kozak added that he was “seeking counseling for his addiction,” and he denied intentionally using church funds for his games. Instead, Kozak says that the charges to the church’s credit cards happened because they were already linked to his cell phone.
The Philadelphia Inquirer states that financial records show that Kozak repaid $10,000 to the parish credit card account from his personal funds. The story also says that Kozak mailed an $8,000 check to his former parish after he had been removed from his post. Along with the check, Kozak wrote a note of apology to his successor at St. Thomas More, and he mentioned his attempts to repay the church.
Kozak is currently free on bail, and his attorney told The Philadelphia Inquirer that “he was reviewing the charges and planned to contact prosecutors about the case in the coming days.”

Assassin’s Creed Codename Red Renamed, Official Reveal Coming Later This Week
Ubisoft has announced that it will be doing a full reveal of Assassin’s Creed Codename Red on May 15, and also that it will be dropping its colorful codename. Instead, the first Assassin’s Creed game set in Japan will now be called Assassin’s Creed Shadows.
The reveal will start on May 15 at 9 AM PT / 12 PM ET and this will be first brand showcase dedicated to Assassin’s Creed Shadows. Ubisoft didn’t provide any more information on the game, but fans are curious whether it will skip the previous generation of consoles.
According to the Ubisoft Store listing data, it appears that it will come to PC, PS4, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S, skipping the Xbox One. However, one insider claims that the game will not come to PS4. We will most likely get confirmation on available platforms when Ubisoft airs the debut reveal trailer later this week.
Assassin’s Creed Shadows was revealed back in 2022 and takes place in feudal Japan. Given the franchise’s theme of stealth, a game set in Japan featuring figures like ninjas felt like a natural fit. Assassin’s Creed Shadows is also being led by the team responsible for Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. Last year, the game’s protagonist was seemingly leaked through a profile banner on a Ubisoft writer’s LinkedIn profile.
Ubisoft has several other games in the series in development, including the mobile-focused Assassin’s Creed Jade set in China and the witch-centered Assassin’s Creed Codename Hexe.
Neuralink Claims First Human Patient Is Playing Runescape, Slay The Spire In His Head
After becoming the first human to receive Neuralink’s N1 implant back in January, 29-year-old quadriplegic Noland Arbaugh is reportedly playing Old School Runescape, Slay The Spire, and a number of other popular games using the implant and signals from his brain.
“I’m beating my friends in games that, as a quadriplegic, I should not be beating them in,” Arbaugh said in a recent Neuralink blog post, adding, “Y’all are giving me too much, it’s like a luxury overload. I haven’t been able to do these things in 8 years, and now I don’t know where to even start allocating my attention.”
Arbaugh, who was left paralyzed from the shoulders down after a 2016 car accident, previously depended on an assistive device known as a mouth stick–a tool that allows users to operate a touchscreen when placed in the mouth, but wasn’t satisfied with the device, as he needed a caregiver nearby if he wanted to use it, and using the mouth stick also carried the risk of developing side-effects like pressure sores and muscle spasms. Additionally, he couldn’t speak while using the device.
“The biggest thing with comfort is that I can lie in my bed and use [the N1],” Arbaugh explained. “Any other assistive technology had to have someone else help or have me sit up. Sitting causes stress mentally and on my body which would give me pressure sores or spasms. [The implant] lets me live on my own time, not needing to have someone adjust me throughout the day.”
But not everything has gone according to plan. Per Neuralink’s blog post, a number of the implant’s threads retracted from Arbaugh’s brain in the weeks following surgery, leading to a net decrease in the number of effective electrodes. This ultimately resulted in a reduction in bits-per-second (BPS) processed by the implant, but Neuralink says the issue has been resolved.
“In response to this change, we modified the recording algorithm to be more sensitive to neural population signals, improved the techniques to translate these signals into cursor movements, and enhanced the user interface,” reads the blog post, which was written by the scientists involved in Neuralink’s Precise Robotically Implanted Brain-Computer Interface (PRIME) study. “These refinements produced a rapid and sustained improvement in BPS, that has now superseded Noland’s initial performance.”
According to Arbaugh, Neuralink’s N1 brain-computer interface (BCI) has drastically improved his quality of life, without the drawbacks he experienced when using the mouth stick. According to the Neuralink blog post, he recently clocked in 69 hours of BCI use in a single week, with 34 of those hours spent on recreational activities like gaming. In addition to Runescape and Slay The Spire, Arbaugh has also been playing Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Sid Meier’s Civilization 6.
“I think [the implant] should give a lot of people a lot of hope for what this thing can do for them, first and foremost their gaming experience, but then that’ll translate into so much more and I think that’s awesome,” Arbaugh said of the N1’s potential for quality-of-life improvement in patients suffering paralysis.
Arbaugh recently uploaded footage of himself using the N1 implant on Twitter, showing followers how he uses his mind to move the cursor. Neuralink is reportedly working on ways to improve the N1 implant’s gaming compatibility.
Shin Megami Tensei V And Its DLC Is Getting Delisted In June Ahead of Vengeance’s Release
Atlus has announced that it will be delisting Shin Megami Tensei V and its DLC from the Nintendo eShop on June 14, the same day that the enhanced Vengeance port releases. Atlus has also confirmed that those who have already purchased the content will still be able to download them after the delisting.
On n Atlus Japan’s website, the company stated that as soon as Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance goes live on digital storefronts, the base version and its corresponding DLC will all disappear. For those who still want the content, it will be available until 11:59 PM on June 13.
Shin Megami Tensei V was first released in November 2021 exclusively for Nintendo Switch. The game is now getting an enhanced re-release in the form of Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance. This version has all previously released DLC and an entirely new story route, which Atlus claims to add 75 hours of more gameplay. It’s also going to be released on all platforms, including PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.
In GameSpot’s Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance preview, we said, “After getting hands-on with the new content in SMT V: Vengeance, the dark and twisted RPG is getting even sicker.”
Square Enix Reveals Aggressive Multiplatform Target Plans With Catchy New Name
Square Enix has revealed its three-year plan to achieve long-term growth within the company. It also gave the plan a catchy name, “Square Enix Reboots, and Awakens.”
There are four pillars in this plan. The first one involves enhancing productivity by focusing more on quality rather than quantity. Additionally, there will be an emphasis on making games “fun” and making sure that Square Enix finds more ways to leverage its rich library of IP.
The second pillar sees Square Enix embracing multiplatform releases, including PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo, iOS, and Android. The focus here is on trying to get more customers to enjoy Square Enix properties. Square Enix is also looking into expanding its IP across all media formats, which could possibly mean things like movies.
The third pillar focuses more on foundational stability, including structural reforms in the company’s European and American offices. There will also be closer collaboration between divisions in Japan. Square Enix will rebuild its systems for training new gradates, and junior and mid-level employees, as well as for hiring and promotions.
Lastly, Square Enix will designate a maximum of 100 billion yen, or approximately $640,000,000, for strategic investments over a three-year period. As for what kind of investments Square Enix will make, the company isn’t ruling out inorganic investments designed to expand its business, which means that acquisitions could be considered.
Last month, Square Enix announced that it expected to lose 22.1 billion yen, or $140,000,000, in “content abandonment losses” for the fiscal year ending on March 31, 2024 due to seemingly canceling projects. Square Enix president Takashi Kiryu revealed earlier this year that the company would shift development processes to create fewer, and higher-quality games.
Why PUBG Is Bringing Back Its Original Map–Warts And All
The PUBG that took the video game industry by storm in 2017 is coming back for a limited time with the Erangel Classic event. Officially known today as PUBG: Battlegrounds, the battle royale that birthed a frenzied race to dominate the genre is looking to its storied past unlike ever before. From May 14-28 on PC, and May 23-June 6 on consoles, the original version of Erangel, the game’s first and, to this day, most beloved map, will be free for all players.
It seems the battle royale genre is now old enough to elicit nostalgia among its players as PUBG is not the first to do this–Fortnite OG saw the game’s original map return for a few weeks at the end of 2023, and the original versions of Call of Duty and Apex Legends’ oldest maps have returned at different times over recent years, too.

We caught up with PUBG: Battlegrounds’ in-game production director, Taehyun Kim, to learn what the team hopes to achieve with Erangel Classic, how it balances nostalgia with quality-of-life improvements, and whether any other map might enjoy a similar blast from the past. He also offered tips to new players who may jump in with the odds stacked against them as they stare down level-500 veterans.
GameSpot: The team is reversing the clock with Erangel Classic. Can you talk about how long this idea has been in development and what you hope players get out of it?
Taehyun Kim: The idea of designing Erangel Classic is relatively recent; we started its design five months ago. As developers, we think the current gameplay with seven years of refinement is as good as the old experience. Erangel Classic isn’t necessarily about offering a completely new experience. Instead, we hope those who enjoyed the old PUBG: Battlegrounds and those who enjoy the current one can both reminisce about the past and make new memories with this update.
The battle royale space has long been full of games inspiring each other. How much did 2023’s “Fortnite OG” event affect Erangel Classic? Did you take any lessons away from it, in terms of what to do or not to do with your own nostalgic event?
Erangel Classic wasn’t inspired by specific games. Instead, the idea came about during a coffee break when some of our team members said they miss the old PUBG: Battlegrounds and want to play in the old Erangel map. That’s where we started. The initial idea was simply to provide a gameplay experience in the old Erangel map, but it eventually evolved into the current Erangel Classic after further refinement and development.
Do you envision any Erangel Classic features sticking around after the event? Personally, I’m partial to the gloomy weather.
There are no plans at the moment.
Erangel Classic revives some “charmingly tacky” features, to borrow your own words, like the old UI font and the availability of clothing as pick-ups around the map. Was there any internal conflict or indecision regarding bringing back these features, which are nostalgic but also not necessarily helpful?
The UI has been improved in a way that is more helpful gameplay-wise through a lot of internal reviews and discussions. It wasn’t an easy choice for us to bring back the less-convenient UI when we already have this advanced version. However, we decided to go ahead with it since we also have cherished memories about the old Erangel and tried hard to recapture the feel and experience from the old PUBG: Battlegrounds.
Erangel in any of its forms is my personal favorite PUBG map. In your own words, what makes the original Erangel map so iconic?
Erangel is PUBG: Battlegrounds’ first map, which provided the first experience of the BR genre to many players leaving them with cherished memories. Featuring various terrain types from cities and farms to forests and hills, the map supports all kinds of combat styles. This terrain diversity allows players to develop various tactics and enjoy strategic gameplay whether it’s thrilling stealth maneuvers or fast-paced assaults. These characteristics make the game more fun and engagingly challenging, which is why Erangel is considered one of the most iconic maps in the entire [battle royale] genre, not just in PUBG: Battlegrounds.
Do you envision running any other nostalgia-themed events like this with other maps? Do players have the same affection for any other maps?
We don’t have specific plans yet. Erangel is where many of our fans met PUBG: Battlegrounds for the first time, and they vividly remember significant moments like their first chicken dinner they had in the map. These memories are what endear Erangel to our fans. Other maps, meanwhile, have their own unique charms and features, leading to varied preferences among players on them based on their tastes.
With modern mechanics like ledge-grabs now being applied to a map that previously didn’t feature them, has the team found any specific areas of the map in which players may have a drastically different experience, such as reaching new heights that were once unavailable?
We optimized the shape of buildings and collisions for parkour and ledge-grabs in Erangel Classic. Some buildings have a slight difference in their forms or placement, but their climbable heights remain similar compared to the current Erangel. However, you will need to be more careful when traveling around rocky mountains or Stalber since mountain areas are now much higher in Erangel Classic.
For players who never played on the original Erangel, how do you suggest they approach this massive map, considering they may be going up against some seasoned veterans? What tips or landing spots might you offer as advice?
Erangel went through a lot of changes with the Remaster, but the core gameplay didn’t change. Erangel Classic has a simpler layout compared to the current version of the map. It has more flat fields, more rugged mountains, and fewer towns and buildings, meaning that you should be more strategic about where to loot. Also, there’s no guaranteed vehicle spawn, so quickly finding a vehicle early in the game is important. In areas like Sosnovka Military Base, you should be especially careful; the absence of catwalks and ferries makes you more vulnerable to attacks on the bridge, like in the past.
Erangel Classic kicks off this week, May 14 on PC, and next week, May 23, on Xbox and PlayStation platforms. Ahead of the event, you can watch a short film, The PUBG Paradox, on YouTube, starring PUBG: Battlegrounds pros Sshroud and WackyJacky101.
